Embracing new environmental techniques

At Poplar we take our responsibilities to the environment very seriously and it is our endeavour to deliver environmental printing services. Increasingly in the world we live in it is becoming more important for all organisations and individuals to be doing their bit and at Poplar we believe we are embracing new environmental techniques to ensure we are demonstrating Corporate Social Responsibility.

We have been both FSC ® and 14001 accredited since early 2008. These standards link into our Quality Management System ISO 9001 which already embraces ISO 12647-2 Colour Management Standard.

What is FSC ?

The Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC) is an international non-profit organisation which supports the world’s forests.

FSC members comprise of a diverse group of representatives from environmental and social groups, the timber trade, paper industry, forestry profession, indigenous peoples organisation and forest production certification groups from around the world.

It is their job to ensure that the forests are managed to protect wildlife habitat and respect the rights of local communities.

FSC Chain of Custody is the process by which the source of timber is verified.

Certification involves inspection and auditing of the land from which the timber and pulp originate and tracking it through all aspects of production until it reaches the end user.

Only organisations such as ourselves who have obtained third party accreditation are able to use the FSC logos on printed products, for a printed product to carry the logo it must have been printed on FSC Paper and have a fully auditable FSC supply chain.

We actively encourage all our Customers to use FSC products but for those who are not quite convinced all our other papers and boards are derived from wood pulp which is sourced from sustainable forests and conform to ECF Elemental Chlorine Free Standards

Solar Powered Production Facility

Poplar Services Printers is proud to be taking positive steps towards a more sustainable future through the adoption of Solar PV technology to help power our print facility. By investing in renewable solar energy, we are significantly reducing our reliance on traditional grid electricity while lowering the overall carbon footprint of our production operations. Printing is an energy-intensive industry, and generating clean electricity on-site allows us to operate more responsibly while maintaining the high production standards our customers expect. This investment forms an important part of Poplar’s long-term commitment to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and efficient manufacturing, helping us deliver high-quality print while supporting a greener future for our industry.

Avoidance or Reduction in the use of Chemicals

Our presses run chemical free and use very little cleaning liquids.

Our inks are fully recyclable.

The above two items virtually eliminate our emissions of VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the atmosphere and therefore reduces a major source of ozone pollution and lowers a potential hazard to our staff.

Paper

All paper, board and packaging used meet our strict environmental specifications and as a minimum they are ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) or TCF (Totally Chlorine Free).

We are an FSC ® (Forest Stewardship Commission ®) registered Company with third party accreditation, we actively encourage the use of FSC Certified Paper,100% Recycled Paper or Paper with an element of recycled fibre.

We offer advice and guidance to our Customers on how to go green from a paper point of view and do our level best to minimise any cost impact.

Recycling our Waste

We invest in the very latest technology to ensure our waste is minimised. We segregate all our paper waste which then goes for recycling.

We continually strive to reduce waste in all practicable areas and regularly review our systems and processes to help achieve this aim.

Drainage Discharge

No pollutants of any type are discharged into the drainage system during the manufacturing process at Poplar Services, all our waste which is kept to the absolute minimum is removed from the premises by a third party licensed Waste Management Company and is treated in accordance with the Hazardous Waste act 2005.
